Serbian star Novak Djokovic, a four-time US Open champion, entered this year’s final Grand Slam of the season as the fourth seed; however, he suffered a shock upset while headlining the night session on the main court on opening day (August 30). Hampered by physical discomfort, he was defeated in a comeback by 25-year-old Argentine Mariano Navone—ranked world No. 49—losing 6–7 (5–7), 7–5, 6–4, 2–6, 1–6, and becoming the highest-seeded player to exit the tournament early.
